On
Monday, November 3 at 5 p.m., consumer advocate and independent
presidential candidate Ralph Nader will hold a press conference at the
Clayton Hall Conference Center, University of Delaware- 100 David
Hollowell Drive, Newark, DE 19716, followed
by at 6 p.m. rally. Mr. Nader will speak on a variety of topics
including the economic crisis, the fraudulent Commission on
Presidential Debates which excludes alternative voices from
participating, and other pressing issues especially pertinent to
Delaware residents.
Nader/Gonzalez condemns Chrysler for its
mismanagement, incompetence and avaricious behavior now leading the
once lucrative auto-maker to shut down its Newark factory. Because of
skyrocketing oil prices and plummeting SUV
sales, Chrysler says the factory, which builds the gas-guzzling Dodge
Durango and Chrysler Aspen, can no longer afford to maintain production
of those vehicles.
Unlike General Motors and Ford who have
each been reporting enormous losses, Chrysler is not obligated to
disclose its finances because it is owned by private investment firm
Cerberus Capital Management. But despite this lack of transparency,
Bloomberg News reported last month that the company lost about $565
million in the second quarter.
Congress recently funded a
bloated energy bill which included a $25 billion bailout in taxpayer
subsidized loans to the auto industry to help get it back on its feet.
But allowing automakers to simply take taxpayer cash without any
guarantee of how it would be put to use is irresponsible governing.
Rather,
there should have been public hearings on the loan request and the
bailout bill should have included conditions to ensure the security of
all workers, their health and wages. In 1979 when Chrysler was facing a
similar downturn, the company went to Congress asking for a $1.5
billion loan guarantee which was granted, but in return, Chrysler was
forced to adhere to strict demands to ensure that type of
accountability.
To combat unemployment, especially in
Delaware whose jobless rate stands at about 7.2 percent, Nader/Gonzalez
urges investment in needed local labor-intensive public works to
improve and rebuild infrastructure and creating a new renewable energy
efficiency policy. The campaign supports Delaware legislation signed
into law earlier this year to give the green light on an offshore wind
farm. The electricity generated by the wind farm’s 120 proposed
turbines will be able to power about 50,000 homes a year.
Nader/Gonzalez
thus welcomes the announcement of a new wind-turbine plant in Delaware
that will create 450 jobs. According to Brevini, the Italian company
planning to build the plant, the average employee will earn about
$46,000 a year.
Mr. Nader will also address other critical
issues the major party candidates have taken "off the table" that the
Nader/Gonzalez Campaign has put on the table, including:
- a comprehensive, six-month negotiated military and corporate
withdrawal date from Iraq;
- a single-payer, private delivery, free-choice public health insurance
system for all;
- a living wage and repeal of the anti-union Taft-Hartley Act;
- a no-nuke, solar-based energy policy supported by renewable,
sustainable, energy-efficient sources;

a carbon tax to deter global warming and a Wall Street securities
derivatives tax to pay for the Washington bailout of Wall Street;
-
an end to the corporate welfare and corporate crime waves that have
resulted in millions losing pensions, savings and jobs and squandered
tax dollars;
- a major public works jobs program to repair America’s schools,
clinics, public transit, bridges, drinking water &
sewage treatment systems paid for by reducing the bloated, wasteful
military budget and ending corporate subsidies; and,

more direct democracy reflecting the preamble to our constitution which
starts with "we the people," and not "we the corporations."
